Humboldt, Saskatchewan

As the CEO of Saskatchewan’s Big Sky Farms Inc., Florian Possberg understands the value of the CQA® program for his business. He has been producing hogs since he graduated from university in 1975. Big Sky Farms Inc. grew out of the Possberg’s farming operation, then known as Possberg Pork Farms Limited. Today, the operation is managed by four Saskatchewan businessmen, who together have more than 60 years experience in the hog industry. Big Sky has about 28,000 sows in production at any given time, and will wean about 700,000 pigs per year. About 630,000 of those will be finished in Big Sky’s own barns.

Big Sky’s mission is simple—“To be a Canadian leader in efficient production of pork in a socially-responsible manner.” CQA® is part of that. The operation, now comprised of 30 production sites, has been involved with CQA® since its beginning, participating in a pilot project before the program was introduced to the wider producer audience. Big Sky now has a permanent CQA® coordinator whose role is to ensure that all employees undergo program training.

Florian Possberg’s philosophy is that, “If you intend to be producing pork on a long-term basis and on a significant scale, you should be on CQA®, because that’s the standard you have to achieve to be in this business.”

Big Sky Farms Inc. exemplifies professionalism in hog production—a quality that processors, retailers, and customers increasingly value. Working hard to ensure that it maintains its CQA®-recognized status, Big Sky is confident in stating that it contributes to the production of high-quality pork. Florian Possberg’s personal commitment to CQA® is evident. Three of his sons and two daughters work along with him at Big Sky, underscoring the family’s commitment to the business of hog production.

Florian firmly believes that every Canadian hog producer should enroll in the program, because it sets the standard required to meet the expectations of today’s customers.
