CQA® Producer Profiles
Clifford Horst
Towerline Farms, Ltd. Southern Ontario producer Clifford Horst grew up in the hog business. “My father had hogs for as long as I can remember,” he reflects. “I’ve been working with them all my life.” These days, Clifford is part of a hog production ‘loop’, a group that includes sow barns, weaner pig barns, and finishing barns in the local area. Towerline Farms, which he operates with his wife, Carolyn, is a new operation, and had its first pigs enter the barn in October 2003. As the barn manager for Towerline Farms, one of the ‘finishers’ in the production loop, Clifford recognizes the benefits that the CQA® program has to offer his operation. “Towerline has been involved with CQA® since we opened, but the barns in the loop where I was working previous to that are all on the program, as well,” Clifford explains. He feels that being on the program adds credibility to the product he is producing for his customers. One element he finds particularly helpful is the recordkeeping the program requires. “Sure, there is extra paperwork to do, but we should be keeping these records anyway. I’m much more aware of what I’m doing from day to day in my barn, because I can look at my records, and everything is right there. CQA® just gives you that extra push to keep them,” he says. “Because of the recordkeeping element of the program,” Clifford adds, “the program is great, not only from a food safety point of view, but from an animal health and a barn management perspective. CQA® is a sound investment for my business.” To learn more about the CQA® program, write or call the Canadian Pork Council at the address and phone number below.
