Hog farming is a family affair for Stanley Boudreau. Together with his brother Dennis, he operates a two-site farming operation in western Nova Scotia. The ‘home farm’, a farrow-to-finish operation that the brothers acquired from their father in 1995, is located in Concession, Digby County. A finishing barn was later purchased in the nearby community of New Tusket. Stanley has been a participant in the CQA® program since 2001, and thinks it is a necessary element for ‘keeping up’ with today’s business world.

“Everyday, in many other professions — doctors, nurses, lawyers, secretaries, fish plant workers — people have to document what they are doing at work,” he explains. “We have to do like everyone else, or we will become the weakest link in the chain.”

Stanley asserts that CQA® is a rigorous program, and a valuable tool that can be used to demonstrate his commitment to producing top quality pork.

“Before producers sign up for the program, they often don’t truly realize the value of being on CQA®. Most of what the program demands, we were already doing anyway. After you enroll in the program, the documentation is not that big of a task, especially after the first year, when you’ve gone through the initial ‘learning process’”, he adds.

“CQA® does help in assuring our customers that we’re doing a good job, so in my mind, it’s well worth it. I think all producers should be on the program.”
